Robotics Hardware Engineer

About the Role:

We're looking for a Robotics Hardware Engineer to design and build Lume. You'll lead mechanical development from early concept and prototyping to CAD for manufacturing. This includes designing robotic arms, integrating actuators and sensors, testing in our SF lab, and working closely with our design and founding teams to bring an entirely new robotic form factor into homes.

What You'll Do:

• Design and prototype an entirely new robotic form factor (furniture that becomes a robot)
• Own mechanical subsystem development (kinematics, actuation, enclosures) for robotic manipulators
• Translate product vision into manufacturable CAD
• Integrate hardware, electronics, and motor control software
• Lead DFM and support early-stage manufacturing planning (supplier onboarding, scaling)
• Drive iteration cycles: build, test, debug, repeat

What We're Looking For:

• Mechanical generalist with a robotics edge (mechanical/mechatronics engineering)
• Strong hands-on experience with 3D printing, machining, rapid fabrication
• Values good design and consumer sensibility in robotics
• Excellent in CAD, Structural FEA, GD&T
• Experience with 6DOF arms, kinematics/dynamics, simulation and control
• Comfortable with electronic skills (motors, sensors, harnesses, power supplies)
• Can lead work with minimal guidance in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment
• Communicates clearly and concisely
• Fluent in Mandarin (preferred for communication with our Chinese suppliers)
• From a top 20 global university

Nice to Have:

• Obsessed with thoughtful design; can point to a product that “sparks joy” and say why
• Loves good food and has a strong opinion on the best burrito within 2 miles (we do team meals)
• Someone with a chip on their shoulder who gets a thrill from proving doubters wrong
• Low-ego collaborator who gives and receives kind, actionable feedback
• Brings a hobby to share (photography, music, sports, etc.)
• Healthy meme game; can explain a research paper and a meme in the same breath

Details:

• $40–$80/hr based on experience ($80k–$160k/yr)
• Full time and internship (6-month minimum contract) options available
• In person, M–F, 9–6 in San Francisco.
• Health benefits included, company holidays, team meals, sick leave, etc.

How to Apply:

Send your resume and a cover letter with bullet points explaining why you’re the perfect candidate for this role (highlighting relevant experiences, projects, publications, and skills). If someone referred you, please include their name in the application.

If there's something unique about you, please mention it. The clearer and more concise, the better 🙂. Make sure to mention your expected start date.
